Our
Town - Yeovil, Somerset, England.
An
unofficial potted tour...
Situated some 135 miles south west of London, the historic market
town of Yeovil is mentioned in the Domesday book. The population
of 40,000 have excellent sports and relaxation facilities with
local golf, swimming, fishing, museums, theatre, cinema and
parks etc. Glove making was an important and early industry
in Yeovil. The town's artisans had unique skills in processing
skins, especially sheep skins into fine leather. Sail making,
rope & twine and linen all helped to contribute to the
wealth of this Saxon town. Agriculture is a very important
activity.
Yeovil has not been left behind in history - It entered the new
millennium with expanding hi-tech electronics and rotary wing
aircraft design and manufacturing and Internet related businesses.
Yeovil is the home town of AgustaWestland Helicopters.
We are only 25 miles from the coast at Lyme Regis (where
'The French Lieutenants's Woman' was filmed.) The area is famous
for fossils.
Yeovil is twinned with Herblay, France and Taunusstein, Germany.
In 2001, we twinned with Samarate in Italy. There are very active
Twinning Associations in all three towns, and regular cultural
and recreational exchanges take place.
For more information on
the Twinning Association, email or
telephone the YTA secretary or contact any one of the YTA committee. See the contact page.
